Lightest. Thing. Ever.

Aerogel is the lightest substance in the world. Like, ever. It's made of 99.8% air. So it basically doesn't exist. Almost. Apparently it's a good insulator, has a melting point of 1,200 degrees Celsius (that's really hot for you Americans) and can be used for electromagnetic shielding and other such things, but really who cares? Just look at this crazy picture! The flame is holding up the aerogel which is in turn holding up the crayons, neither of which is melting. Awesome.

Matchbooks Cause I Said So

I've always thought old matchbooks were pretty neat. Not sure why. Do you agree? Not really? Do I care? Also not really. The Matchbook Museum has a pretty good collection online so check 'er out. Cause I said so.

Power to the PotterPuffs

WARNING: More Harry Potter content. Sorry.

God I love pop culture mash ups. For some reason these types of things make me squeeeee! with joy. God I'm a nerd. Much in the same vain as the as the South Park style Lost characters I had told you about a few months ago, this is a Harry Potter/Powerpuff Girls mash up. Live Journal user Naomi Noelle has created PotterPuffs where she brilliantly draws various Harry Potter characters in Powerpuff Girls style. She also uses her PotterPuffs to depicts various scenes from the books/films as well as other "scenes" that appear neither in the books or the film (ie: a Harry/Snape romance). Not sure why these things amuse me so, but they do. Try not to be so negative.

Brantastic

Here's a super neat idea. Bran is a site that features tons of these cute little guys. Each is designed with the same basic outline or template called, amazingly enough, a bran. Anyone is free to grab the original template, design their own little dude and submit it to the site. I kind of like the idea of trying to be really creative within potentially limiting restrictions. It's more difficult but ultimately encourages a unique interpretation of something basic. There are over a hundred of these brans online right now. Some of the best ones are Napoleon Dynamite, the Joy of Painting dude Bob Ross, Mr. T, Michael Jackson, Ronald McDonald, KISS, a jellyfish(!) and a shitload of others. Hellacool.

HELLO my name is a Harry Potter reference

You'll only appreciate this if you're a Harry Potter fan. If you're not, feel free to make fun and be on your merry way. Good, now that they're all gone, check out this awesome piece of Harry Potter graffiti. Someone felt compelled to scribble the Patronus charm in authentic graffiti writting style on a HELLO my name is sticker in the bathroom of a pub somewhere in the states. And I can see why. I mean really, why wouldn't you do that? In fact, I think I'll go do that right now. Bye.

Old School Flavor

Nishant Choksi has a really neat drawing style. His pictures remind me of something you'd find in an old magazine advert. They've got a an awesome old school flavor to them which makes me want to type something on a typewritter or...something. Something old.

Crazy Straw Art

I got this from a Portuguese blog so I'm not quite sure of the details but the pictures are quite clear. This dude (from Brazil?) makes incredibly detailed little critters out of drinking straws. My question is, how does one discover that one is incredibly talented in straw art? Is it something you randomly stumble upon on a rainy day or is it more like a feeling, a calling that comes from places unknown? Just asking.

Bloody Cute

Luke Chueh's paintings are an awesome combination of cute cuddlies and blood, guts and vomit. It's amazing the sort of mixed emotions that these paintings invoke. It kind of goes something like this: "Awwewww." Yeah, that's about it. I love so many of the pictures that I could just choose a few so I decided to post them all. I know, sometimes I get carried away. Check his site for a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Pixelicious

Pixel Freak is a site belonging to Rene Hernandez Miranda, a 19 year-old dude (chick?) from El Salvador (just for you Eduardo). It features his/her pixel art. And believe me, you have no idea how cool pixel art can be. Check out this monstrous poster of a pixel city. The level of detail is incredible and I don't think I've even managed to scan through the entire thing.

This is a flash animation of a pixel house created floor by floor, room by room with pixels. It kind of reminds me of the Sims games.

For some quick tips on pixel art check out the tutorial. And if you really want to be inspired, check out my very own pixel art here:

You Vote, I Get Rich

Dearest readers, your humble and obedient blogger begs your assistance in this very important matter. The 2005 Canadian Blog Awards are accepting votes from the public effective tomorrow, November 24th until Wednesday, November 30th. Now considering this is by far the best (and only) blog you've ever read, it would make great sense for you to vote for me in the following categories: Best Blog, Best New Blog and Best Culture Blog. Vote now and vote often (up to once a day I think). Yes, yes I know: "big geek...blah blah blah...nerd...blah blah...has no friends...blah" and that's all fine and dandy but, dear readers, you must understand that this is all part of my master plan to gain exposure for my blog, get discovered by some mass media conglomerate that is looking to expand into the realm of blogs, become employed by said conglomerate to write my blog, get paid exorbitant amounts of money to do so and subsequently buy a nice laptop and maybe an island where I can retire. The end. Who is laughing now? Vote now. Please.

Cocky Cake

When I was a kid I almost peed in my pants when my mom bought me an ice cream cake with clowns on it for my birthday. Boy did I think that was the shit. Apparently I was wrong. The "cakes" Confetti Cakes in New York are making are so elaborate that I can only imagine that they're no fun to eat (I can only imagine because I'll never buy an $800 cake). I mean, how would you even try to cut the damn thing? And wouldn't you feel really guilty for ruining something someone obviously put a lot of work into? Kind of like ripping off nicely done wrapping on a gift. If someone was dumb enough to get me one of these I think I'd take about 30 pictures of it before I even thought about actually eating it. I bet you $800 it tastes like shit anyway.

Tea Styles

I love products with well-designed packaging. In fact, sometimes the packaging is more important than the product itself. Like in this case. Tea Forte is tea. Bad tea? Maybe. Good tea? Probably. Expensive tea? Definitely. But all of that is irrelevant when you consider how well-packaged the product is. The tea bag (or "infuser pouch" for those in the know) is made of an elegant translucent material that not only allows the water to seep through but also exposes the tea leaves. The pouch is also a clever pyramid shape which allows it to stand in the bottom of your mug and the whole thing comes together with a little green cotton leaf that acts as a handle. Perfect.

I can't believe that no one has thought of this before. I can't believe that I haven't thought of this. Scatological aficionados gather round: behold the Pee & Poo plush dolls. Even if you hate all things potty (Ben), you can't deny that these guys are cute. So cute in fact that you'll want to cuddle with your very own poo (or pee). You can purchase these little guys along with other Pee & Poo paraphenalia here.

Art-A-Sketch

I love Etch-A-Sketch as much as the next person. Unless the next person is one of the people who made these drawings. Etch-A-Sketch art is certainly not for everyone (ie: anyone who has a job/family/life) but it sure is neat to look at. The only trouble I see with these pictures is that you can never use that same Etch-A-Sketch toy again. I mean who would want to spend all that time making one of these only to shake the shit out of it and start all over again? No one. So every time you wanted to make a new picture you'd have to buy a new toy.

11 Year-Old Potential

Jack Gregory is the coolest kid ever. I accidentally stumbled upon his blog Life In Laguardia, and let me tell you, this kid is cool. His blog is still in its infancy (only 7 posts old), but it shows amazing potential. Riveting insight from the life of an 11 year-old. On his blog you'll find such nuggets as "We started to watch the movie Napoleon Dynamite, which is probably one of the single greatest comedies on the planet" and "when evr i try to smile i always get some weird looking expression where i look like i'm totally nuts or i'm really constipated [sic]." Awesome. His most recent post is about how he stayed up for 24 hours straight for the first time ever. A momentous occasion indeed. Plus this kid had the single best Halloween costume I've seen this year: Martha Stewart in jail. I'll definitely keep an eye on this kid.
