Flip An iPod

Nano not mini enough for you? How about the iPod XS? It's got the display on one side and the display screen on the other and it's the size of a quarter. Just don't accidentally give it to a bum. Also it's not real, it's just a concept by the folks at Yanko Design. But the way Apple is going, it's not too far fetched.

Pumpcuter or Compumpkin?

This blog has always been big on DIY projects. From disturbingly accurate playdough oranges to X-Wing Starfighter origami to Mario mosaics, this is the place to be for the latest and greatest step-by-step arts and crafts guides. And now...this. Google Dress Up

I've seen some pretty cool Hallowe'en costumes this year: Super Mario, Ghost Busters, Hunter S. Thompson (a la Fear and Loathing) and this guy. Check out his picture on Flickr. He dressed up as a Google Image search for "halloween costume". Awesome.

Japanese Business Man Spend Valuable Time

MasaManiA is a blog by a freakin awesome Japanese guy. His goal is to give an accurate account of what life is like in Japan. All the pictures on his site are pictures he has taken around Tokyo and his commentary is, um, riveting? In his own words:

Japanese culture report by MasaManiA with fucking photo & poor English you never seen at boring CNN, Time or major sophisticated jurnalism. I don't know what is good, bad, right or wrong, but I certainly know there is the truth ! I also know it must be FUCK ! MasaManiA is mania of the truth beyond moral. It's moral entertainment. See? Riveting. One of his posts from September 2004 is a collection of pictures he has taken of exhausted Japanese businessmen. He calls it "Japanese business man spend valuable time."

Less Words More Pictures

A couple of weeks ago the American Society of Magazine Editors released a list of their picks for the Top 40 Magazine Covers of the Last 40 Years but I didn't write about it because they only released the list but not the actual pictures. And really, what is this blog without the pictures? I mean, how many of you actually read what I write as opposed to simply scanning the pictures? Be honest, raise your hands...you're not even reading this right now are you? It's ok, I know. Anyway, now that the moment has passed I guess they thought it was safe to show all the covers and now I'm passing them on to you because I know that's all you want from me anyway.

Jellyfish Fridays XIII

Almost missed it today! Unlucky Jellyfish Fridays XIII. Whew, that was a close one. We're not even sure this one is real (kind of looks like a fried egg with cauliflower and blueberries to us) but if comes from a fairly reliable source.

Seuss Sells

Did you know that before he discovered his talent for rhyming words like "Sam" and "am", Theodore [Dr.] Seuss Geisel worked as an advertising illustrator in the 1920s. You can already see the Seussiness of the characters in his ads. I love how sweet and wholesome these ads seem: they're not trying to dupe you into buying a product, they're telling the gosh darn honest truth. Vintage Hallowe'en

I think I've already alluded to my fondness for all things Hallowe'en and if I haven't, well now you know. Keith Milford's Old Haunts is a spectacularly unique blog that really fills that void for vintage Hallowe'en paraphernalia. From people's own Hallowe'en photos from the 1930s to carved pineapples to boardgames and flyers and children's book and old face paint tubes and Saturday morning Hallowe'en specials, this blog's got it all. And it's up all year round for your vintage viewing pleasure.

Clevr Name For A Colr Pickr

Colr Pickr is a supercool experimental application that come once again from Jim Bumgardner (of Coverpop fame). It uses a colour palette and pictures from the Flickr group Color Fields (a collection of user-submitted photos each focusing on a single colour) to allow you to retrieve pictures filled with any hue you're looking for. It's kind of difficult to explain so just try it out for yourself.

Manhattan Flash

Manhattan Timeformations is an interactive Flash site that uses "layers of urban information" to create a digital render of the Manhattan infrastructure. You can fly through the different layers, view them in chronological order or have a look at a cross section of Manhattan to see how the geological, communication, transportation and real estate infrastructures relate to one another. Neat, but why does it always have to be New York?

Mad Pops

Coverpop is a neat interface created by Jim Bumgardner that displays the covers of a given category of books, magazines or CDs. Each page is a mosaic composed of these timy cover pictures organized by hue. Each picture becomes enlarged and pops to the forefront of the screen when you scroll over it. The covers include science fictions books, graphic novels and Mad Magazine covers. Perfect for anyone who has hours and hours of their life to kill off.

1 Second Film = 1 Producer Credit

The 1 Second Film is more than just a scam to get your name listed in the IMdB, it's a neat idea and the proceeds go to charity: what more could you ask for? The film (which is actually one second long) consists of 12 frames painted on giant 5 by 9 foot canvases by hundreds of people back on March 8th, 2001. Each canvas will be shot twice to make 24 frames, or 1 second of film. OK, that's all fine and dandy but what do you care? Well the organizers of the 1 Second Film are giving you a chance to buy a producer credit on the film which means that for a minimum donation of $1US (goes to the Global Fund for Women) your name will appear in the credit roll (which they estimate will last an hour and a half) alongside such names as Samuel L. Jackson, Christina Ricci and Steve Buscemi and you'll get your very own listing on the IMdB! Pretty neat-o. I donated $1 (yeah well so did Pauly Shore).

Poor Man's iPod Video

If you're like me and you bought a colour iPod just before they released the video iPod then you're pissed as hell. But fear not dear reader, for I have found a solution to our woes. iPod Scrubs is a site that offers something like digital flipbooks. You can download a series of images to your iPod and when you "scrub" through them in your photo gallery it will give the illusion of movement. Sure you have to do it manually but your thumb could use the workout. Each scrub last about five seconds depending on how quickly you move through the pictures. There's some pretty neat stuff you can get your hands on like an exploding apple, some cheap anime and a panoramic tour of Times Square. Now if only someone would take the time to make a scrub of Lost.

Computer Art

Jared Tarbell makes computer art. How? Glad you asked. "With an algorithmic goal in mind, [he] manipulate[s] the work by finely crafting the semantics of each program." He also says something about spreading love via source code so I suggest you don't pay too much attention to the words but do take a look at his work. His site Complexification features some pretty impressive work made entirely from computer programs. The interesting part is that the pictures have a really organic feel to them. Is there anything computers can't do?

Cassette Culture

I don't know why, but for some reason looking at a bunch of pictures of cassettes makes me a little weepy with nostalgia. The site Cassette Jam '05 is an exhaustive gallery of cassette tapes, one of which you were probably rewinding with a pencil while cursing your walkman sometime in 1989. I recognized more than one of these little guys and with them came a flood of memories of waiting for the freakin' DJ to stop talking so that I could tape some Mr. Big or Kriss Kross or En Vogue song off the radio. Sure the page take forever to load and it's in Japanese, but it's worth the wait and you're only there for the pictures anyway.

Cuddle Orgy

So this isn't weird. REiD Mihalko (that's how he spells it: capital R, E and D), a relationship coach from Manhattan just needed a little human touch. And apparently so does everyone else. In an attempt to fill that void in our lives, REiD has created Cuddle Party which is basically a big pyjama party where everyone cuddles with one another. Yeah, you heard me. REiD describes it as "an event for adults to get together and explore affectionate touch and communication without it becoming sexualized." Still confused? Try out their FAQs where you'll find helpful answers to such questions as: "This is really just an excuse to have an orgy, right?" (no) and "Can I get stoned at a Cuddle Party?" (and no).
