Less Words More Pictures

A couple of weeks ago the American Society of Magazine Editors released a list of their picks for the Top 40 Magazine Covers of the Last 40 Years but I didn't write about it because they only released the list but not the actual pictures. And really, what is this blog without the pictures? I mean, how many of you actually read what I write as opposed to simply scanning the pictures? Be honest, raise your hands...you're not even reading this right now are you? It's ok, I know. Anyway, now that the moment has passed I guess they thought it was safe to show all the covers and now I'm passing them on to you because I know that's all you want from me anyway.

1, 3 and 10 are the only ones I recognise as covers that made a lasting impression. Aside from a few other also-rans, most of these covers are not worth a second look, and I see no justification for their inclusion. The selection would be better if they'd included mind-altering album covers (Dark Side of the Moon, Sticky Fingers, Never Mind the Bollocks, London Calling, anyone?) I'm also sure there are more memorable magazine covers that didn't get on the shortlist. Some of those old Look and Life covers - the grainy B&W photos, magazines like Ramparts and Avant Garde, and, dare I say it, magazines like Zap! Comix.
