Year-End Love

Apparently if you have a blog it's pretty much illegal not to have a year-in-review of sorts. Now this list was difficult to make - these links are links are like my children and I love them all equally. Ninja Necessity

I have to say that I am embarrassed by the lack of ninja-related content that has appeared on this blog. In fact, I don't think I have even mentioned ninjas in the entire, albeit brief history of this blog. So to all you loyal readers I pledge to make a concentrated effort to bring you a fair amount of relevant ninja material. We'll start this effort no later than today with Sparkle Ninja Chewing Gum from Archie McPhee - no good ninja can go without. Little information is available about this mysterious gum other than what is evident from its packaging. That is to say it is guaranteed to provide you with supreme nunchakus skills and will ensure that your pink ninja outfit sparkles in all it's glory. Simply a must for all you deadly assassins out there.

Chronic-WHAT-cles of SNL

This has been making the internet rounds so you've probably already seen it but it's so good that I thought I'd give it a home here nonetheless. Saturday Night Live's Chris Parnell and Andy Samberg's Beastie Boysesque Chronic-WHAT-cles of Narnia (it's actually called Lazy Sunday) is a freaking hilarious ode to stoned movie-watching complete with a discussion about which online map service is best ("Google maps is the best. True dat. Double true!") and a reference to those stupid movie trivia questions they put on before the film starts ("Parked in our seats, movie trivia's the illest. What Friends alum starred in films with Bruce Willis?"). Check out the cashier at the movie box office: she's trying so hard not to laugh at them. People might actually start watching SNL again because of this.

Is Regular Soap Decaf?

This...is funny. Shower Shock is a peppermint scented caffeinated soap that gives you a little boost in the morning if you're finding it difficult to make that first cup of coffee in the morning. The caffeine is absorbed through the skin(!) when you lather the soap. I'm sorry but if you need caffeine this badly then perhaps you shouldn't be leaving the house at all. I'm sure it would be fun to try though.

Wine On Wheels

I could make a "Don't Drink & Drive" joke here but that would be too easy. All I know is these things are super freakin cool, but they're also a carpet stain waiting to happen.

Anyone know where I can pick up some of these? Carpets be damned!

Window Wings

Check out the Glasswing Butterfly. I wonder what evolutionary purpose transparent wings have. Can someone tell me? An effective form of camouflage I suppose. Man, this butterfly is why blogs exist.

The Man With The Poetry About Creepy Children

Some person unknown has put Tim Burton's book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy: and Other Stories online for all to see. The stories are cute and touching in a sad and grotesque kind of way. Take for example The Boy with Nails in his Eyes:

Voodoo That You Do

Sandplay

This is a neat Applet application from a Japanese site called Dofi-Blog. Based on the Google translation of the site I was able to gather that the application is called Sandplay (which makes sense) and the rest is pretty intuitive. The application is designed so that the elements of sand, water, plant and fire interact with each other based on how you lay them out of the screen. Water makes the plant grow, fire destroys it. Water and sand gather on cera (which I'm assuming is something like cement) and mix together. It's not really a game but man is it addictive.

The Mystery of the Nevada Shoe Tree

Somewhere just outside of Reno in Nevada, in a place people call "The Middle of Nowhere", on a stretch that is known as "the loneliest road in America", there's a little (well really big actually) curiosity called the Nevada Shoe Tree. It's a huge cottonwood tree with thousands and thousands of pairs of shoes hanging from it's highest branches. The Nevada Shoe Tree is surprising poorly documented. I couldn't even find a Wikipedia entry on it! The best piece of information I could find is this article from the San Francisco Chronicle that states that none of the residents in the area really know who or why or how the shoe tree came to be. There are stories about a man that threw his girlfriend's shoes in the tree to stop her from running away on their way to elope in Reno. I think it's great that no one knows how it started because I love the idea that there are still little mysteries out there that no one can spoil for everyone else. I also love that there are places called "The Middle of Nowhere."

Birthday Haul

Since I know you're all so terribly interested in my life, I thought I'd give you a rundown of the super freakin sweet gifts I got for my birthday. I think I brought in a pretty good haul this year: all of this plus some gifts certificates, lots of booze and some jewelry that can't find pictures of.

Check out the boys from South Park drawn realistically. This is from the episode Free Willzyx that aired on November 30th, 2005. I haven't seen it myself but I wonder how they managed to work this into the story. Also, Cartman looks gross.

The Anatomy of Animation

Like every other kid growing up in the 60s, Michael Paulus was fascinated by cartoons and animated characters. Unlike every other kid growing up in the 60s however, Michael Paulus wanted to try to "come to an understanding as to their origins and true physiological make up" by "dissecting" his beloved cartoon characters. Paulus took to drawing what he thought would be the skeletal systems of various animated characters. The results are are pretty neat and often rather grotesque (especially those Powederpuff Girls. Ew).

Ryu vs Scorpion

If you're like me and you love versus fighting video games (cause you can kick someone's ass simply by pressing every button in a manic kind of way) they you'll love the video Mortal Combat vs Street Fighter by some dude who calls himself Proxicide which is Latin for big D&D geek. But that's ok because the video is still cool. Ryu crosses dimensions via an inter-dimentional worm hole and squares off against Scorpion. There are lots of super cool moves, lots of Scorpion shouting "come 'ere!" and even a love story. This thing is rife with Hadoken goodness.

Google has released their always interesting annual Zeitgeist ("the spirit of the time" in Geman) for 2005. They take the statistics they have gathered about search queries and relate them to events that have transpired in the real world. It's a really neat snapshot of what's on the collective mind of internet users the world over.

Lip Bomb

Lotta Luv is a New York-based company that sells novelty-flavoured lip balms. Flavours include JellyBelly, Dr. Pepper, Cinnabon and, um...Cheetos. Yeah. I wonder if they basically just took the residue that ends up on your fingers when you eat Cheetos and stuffed it into a plastic tube. Also, does it make your lips orange? Gross.

Meet The Flags

Icaro Doria, a Brazilian reporter for the magazine Grande Reportagem, has started a particularly poignant project (ooh, accidental alliteration!) called Meet The World. Doria has taken statistical data from Amnesty International and the United Nations and combined them with a given country's flag which serves as a visual representation of the statistics. The result is an interesting and distressing portrayal of some of the most important problems that plague the world. Really neat stuff. More here.

The drawing blew my mind and seeing it in a photograph is almost more disorienting. Further proof that you can do anything with Lego.

Shameless Self-Promotion

OK, here is a shameless plug for my own work. If you know me, then you already know that I'm a student in a television production program. If you don't know me, well, now you know that too. Stupid Drink Idea #4: Snapple Pie

In the spirit of Jones Soda's Holiday Pack, and just in time for Christmas when people will spend money on just about anything, Snapple has released it's Snapple Pie line (and by line I mean two flavours): Snapple Apple Pie and Snapple Berry Mix & Mingle. Apparently both taste like crusty pie. I don't know what the deal is. Why are all these beverage brands trying so hard to get our attention with weird new products? Are people just not drinking as much as they used to? First there was Jones Soda and Brain Twist's Liquid Cereal, Coca Cola Blāk and now this. It's like these companies are all trying to win the competition for Dumbest Idea For a Consumable Non-Alcoholic Drink. "Look at me, I taste like crusty goodness!" "Yeah well I'm regurgitated cereal!" "Screw you guys, I taste like turkey and mashed potatoes!" Man, just give it up already...actually don't, cause then I'll have nothing to write about.

MorFun

MorFits Quest is one addictive little son of a bitch of a point-and-click game. The goal? Take care of your MorFits (the cutest little guys that you ever did see) and help them to grow big and strong and take them through the various stages in their lives so they can finally make their way into the world. "How do I do that", you ask? Simple, really: just give them what they want. Hungry? Then feed them. Thirsty? Give them water. Tired? Let them sleep. Lazy? Pump them up with some weights. Just don't give them something they didn't ask for cause they'll throw a little temper tantrum. What's that? You're ignoring one of them? Well, you're gonna hear about it, that's for sure: first come the dirty looks, then the crying, then they get sick, then they regress in their development and then, well then they die. I made it to level 9 until somebody (Eduardo) turned my computer off so we could go see King Kong. Like that wasn't a waste of time.

Shelfish

Selfshelf is a neat idea by designer Dutch Nicole van Schouwenburg. Looks like the books are standing up on the wall all by themselves, huh? Huh? Yeah they do! But that bottom book is actually a shelf designed to look like a book! Clever, no? The "book" comes in three different colours, complete with a picture of a dude with a doorag on the spine. And did you catch the title of the "book"? "Ceci n'est pas un livre." Even cleverer. Available at Dutch By Design.
